Antonio Montero Pisco, Master Shaman, Amazon Rainforest

Shaman Antonio has been a shaman in the Peruvian Amazon for more than 50 years. When he was only 5 years old, his grandparents, who were shamans in a northern Peruvian Amazon village, recognized that Antonio had a “gift” regarding healing plants. To develop this “gift” they took Antonio deep into the forest where he could learn directly from the forest spirits. Being so young, he was reluctant and scared at first. But his grandparents persisted and eventually Antonio accepted his calling and learned about medicinal plants and ceremony. In his young adulthood, Antonio worked with a number of government and non-government agencies seeking to chronicle medicinal plants in the Amazon. After moving to Iquitos, where he still lives with his family, Antonio took work at an eco-tourism lodge to make extra money. It is there that he met renowned ethnobotanist Dr. James Duke. They soon formed a life long friendship. In 1996, Antonio became curator of the medicinal plant gardens created by the Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research (ACEER). He worked with Dr. Duke to create the ReNuPeRu ethnobotanical garden where hundreds of individuals have studied medicinal plants and benefited from the passion and knowledge that Antonio offers. Antonio continues his shamanic practice in Iquitos, and welcomes opportunities to share his wisdom with others in health and healing workshops offered by the ACEER.
